La Guirlande de thumbaï

The thumbai garland

The year was 1995 and the Yogi Ramsuratkumar Ashram was under construction. "Arul" the present dining hall was completed and Bhagavan started giving darshan in this hall. He used to come promptly at 10 A.M. accompanied by the four Sudama sisters. Two of them would sit on the platform with him, while two others would sit near him on the floor, all ready to do his bidding. He was so punctual that visitors would say that they could set their watches by his arrival.

A large number of devotees used to assemble in the hall, all sitting facing Bhagavan. It was difficult for a devotee to have access to him or speak to him owing to a variety of circumstances.

One day an old man came with a one inch thick garland made of thumbai poo. (These are tiny white flowers not more than 2 or 3 mm in length). Pure white, flowering in charming clusters on tiny plants it is difficult to gather those tiny flowers - from 20 plants may be you can gather a handful. To have collected so many and strung them into a one inch about three feet long thumbai garland? It is mind boggling.

The old man wanted only to garland Bhagavan with his labour of love but he was refused permission. However he was allowed to go and sit inside the hall where he silently looked at Bhagavan and shed tears. He had pleaded with the doorman that he would do nothing except garland Bhagavan and would not indulge in any talk, but the doorman was adamant. So he sat there, a picture of dejection, holding the pure white garland, stringing which had taken hours. But what to do, if it was his fate, he could not garland Bhagavan; still the tears came.

Bhagavan who was observing the gathering for a while got up from the dais and came down to walk amongst the devotees. The devotees sat quietly causing no disturbance. When he came near the old man with the garland on his lap, he paused looking at him with one finger raised to his mouth. The old man unaware of His august presence, continued his gloomy reflections. A neighbour attempted in draw his attention but Bhagavan made a sign that he should not disturb. Suddenly Bhagavan sat down next to the old man, who, startled turned around and became speechless with amazement and shock while his eyes continued to stream tears- now of joy and adoration. Bhagavan made a sign that he should put to garland on his neck and so it was done.

What if a thousand managers and doormen refused permission to garland his Beloved? The Beloved was here, knowing exactly what the situation was and ready to remedy the lapse! The omniscient Lord had decided to offer Himself to be garlanded, even if the devotee was not permitted to do the garlanding!

The entire crowd was deeply moved at this act of Grace and Bhagavan entered their heartsby the love and compassion that he showed.
