The first Darshan

Le premier Darshan

Meenakshi Ramamurthy

I am Meenakshi Ramamurthy from Singapore and now I live in Bangalore, India.

Darshan in May 1983

It was in May 1983 that I was in Tiruvannamalai, with 2 devotees of Sathya Sai Baba - Raymond Quake and Vincent Koo. All three of us were visiting Tiruvannamalai. When we went for lunch to Ramanashram, I heard some people talking about 'Visiri Samiyar.' People mentioned - He was called 'Kottanguchi Samiyar' or 'Therumutti Samiyar' and that He had 'piercing eyes' and a 'compassionate smile'.

We went to his House to see Him in the afternoon - under the hot sun. It must have been around 2.00 p.m. We stood near the steps of the house. There was no one on the road. The structure and its walls looked dilapidated. I noticed a fairly big window with bars. There was no doorbell and no Verandah. We could not spot any attender who could inform Him of our arrival.

Only the three of us stood like madcaps, having left our slippers in the car, our feet were also burning. But we wanted to see Guruji very badly. After a few minutes, Suddenly, I saw two shaven heads pop up in the large window - it was the sight of two young boys; one who looked like he was 15-16 years and the other one, younger. They looked like Buddhist monks, wrapped in saffron. I felt something was going on and offered my Pranams to them. They quickly disappeared from the window.

It felt like we were waiting for ages. You know the heat of Tiruvannamalai. Our feet were also burning, and we were sweating profusely - we felt tired, and our enthusiasm was slowly ebbing away. We felt lost.

Suddenly, we spotted Guruji. He shouted.

"Who are you all. Why have come to my doorstep"? He asked.

This was the last straw for Vincent. The heat had made him rather short tempered.

"We have come to see you Swami"Vincent replied.

"You have seen me, you can go", responded Swami.

Finished. There ended! We could not do anything after that. We felt really down - you could even say underground.

I told Vincent and Raymond not to move from the place and that even if it meant standing there till the night - we would not leave without Darshan of Guruji.

Very slowly and softly - I told Vincent:

"You shouldn't say 'we have come to see you' to Great Souls", I told Vincent gently. "When you meet Great Souls - you should have used the word 'Darshan".

Vincent understood what I meant, and we waited patiently.

After a few minutes, Guru Raya came out. He had a long dirty robe and a fancy headdress. His smile was very beautiful, and you could see His smile through His beard. His eyes were piercing but compassionate.

"Come in", He said.

The three of us marched into Sannadhi Street House like little lambs.

There was another surprise. It was a huge hall - no window, no backdoor. Plain three walls. There were nails on all the walls with withered flower garlands hanging - three on this wall, three on that wall. I don't know when they were given to Him, when He had worn them but they were there - dozens of them all over the wall.

On the floor, I saw mounds of sand and 3-4 gunny bags, empty cement bags. (The description for the L shaped verandah of the Sannadhi Street abode - Editor.)

"Please sit", He said

When I sat, I saw on my right side - huge mound of sand with some sand scattered. When I tried to push it, He shouted, "Don't touch" "It is not just any sand particle. Each and every particle is a Deva. They have come down to Earth. Don't touch"

I profusely apologized and said I would not do this again. Swami ignored me completely and began to talk to Raymond. I was suddenly surprised because I wondered where the two boys went. There was only one door and had they left, they would have certainly passed us while leaving. However, I dare not ask Him.

Guru Raya gave me a look and taking out a cigarette, He took a deep puff and inhaled the smoke. He then threw the half-smoked cigarette into his coconut bowl.

I was waiting for Him to exhale the smoke. There was no smoke. I was wondering that the smoke might suffocate Him but there was no smell of cigarettes or no smoke that came out. He gave me a look and I knew he read my mind. I felt so sheepish. He then got up, took two books and gave one to me and one to Raymond.

"Somebody has written something about this Beggar, you can read it."

While He gave Raymond the English book, He knew intuitively that I knew Tamil and gave me the book with 'Om' signed on it. I dare not express to Him, how He assumed I knew Tamil.

After some time, He asked, "Who told you about Me?" How I came to knew about Him.

I then told him about Kamala, my mother's younger sister. She lost everything early in life. She was a very devout person who visited a lot of Saints and went on pilgrimages.

Swami recognized her immediately and said "Ohhh that Kamala", He said, with a great sense of familiarity. "I used to call her Yogi Kamala"

After taking His Blessings, we took leave of Him.

Mystery of the two boys was revealed at the Arunachala Temple:

I was still wondering what happened to those two boys who I had seen. After this, we went to the Arunachala temple and a priest was there. I could not help but tell the priest about our Darshan of Bhagavan Yogi Ramsuratkumar and the two young monks I saw and how they went missing. The priest asked me to repeat my sharing again. The priest then told me

"Amma you are very lucky as you have had darshan of Rama and Lakshmana themselves. They normally come down to meet Bhagavan Yogi Ramsuratkumar"

I then understood why Swami had been very particular about the sand. The Devas had accompanied Lord Rama and Lord Lakshmana to visit Him, which is why Swami had told me not to touch the sand. This is what I had come to understand.

About Yogi Kamala:

Yogi Kamala, aunt of Mrs. Meenakshi went with her friends on a pilgrimage to Kashi and she wanted to gift something special for Guru Raya. She searched high and low for a gift which said "Om Sri Ram Jayaram Jaya Jaya Ram" since that was the Taraka Mantra that Papaji had initiated Him with. It was very difficult to find anything other than 'Om Nama Shivaya' in Kashi. However, she was determined to buy a shawl for Bhagavan Yogi Ramsuratkumar.

She half-heartedly bought a shawl with OM NAMA SHIVAYA on it. When she went to gift the shawl to Bhagavan Yogi Ramsuratkumar,

"Yogi Kamala what have you brought for me", asked Bhagavan.

Very half-heartedly, she pulled out a shawl and gave it to Him. She was still disappointed that she had been unable to find the perfect shawl with the Rama Taraka Mantra on it.

Bhagavan shook it very nicely. He said it was very nice and wrapped it around Himself. To Yogi Kamala's utmost wonder - the words on the shawl had changed from OM NAMA SHIVAYA to OM SRI RAM JAYARAM JAYA JAYA RAM. What a thrilling
experience for Yogi Kamala!

Je me sentais tellement penaude.
